Hawaiian Footed Paneled Umeke

$4,500.00

Hawaiian, Maui attribution

1820s

Kou wood (Cordia subcordata)

Diameter: 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm)

Provenance: Randy Nagatani Collection, Kahala, Hawaiʻi; Hawaiʻi private collection

Footed bowls with paneled exteriors represent a distinct form within Hawaiian vessel production, less common than the standard rounded umeke and associated with a higher level of finish and intended use. The paneled outer surface required sustained and precise adze work to achieve consistent flat facets across a curved form. This example, dated to the 1820s, carries a Maui attribution and two documented Hawaiʻi collections.

The bowl is supported on a turned circular foot, the exterior divided into multiple flat panels with a honey-brown patina of varied tone across the kou grain. Four pewa butterfly repairs are present on the exterior, with gum repairs visible on the interior surface, together documenting the bowl's active use and the care taken to preserve it. The kou retains its characteristic figuring and warmth throughout.
