Hawaiian
18th century
Kauila wood (Alphitonia ponderosa)
Length: 15 1/8 in. (38.4 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi; remnants of an old label present on surface
The iʻe kuku is the grooved wooden beater used in the production of kapa, the beaten-bark cloth central to Hawaiian material and ceremonial life. Kauila, one of the hardest native Hawaiian woods, was the preferred material for beaters of this type, chosen for its density and resistance to splitting under sustained impact. This example, dated to the eighteenth century, represents early production and carries a private Honolulu provenance with traces of an old collection label.
The beater is carved in the adze-worked tradition, tapering from a broad grooved face to a rounded handle terminal, with incised lines across the face cut in the manner associated with shark tooth tools. The parallel grooved surface served to thin and texture the kapa during beating, with finer-grooved beaters used in finishing stages. The kauila has developed a deep, even patina consistent with age and use.
