This hand-colored copper plate engraving depicts a view in Owhyhee, an early European spelling for Hawai‘i, with one of the priest’s houses shown within a coastal settlement. It was published in A New Royal, Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography, printed for C. Cooke at Pater-Noster Row in London. The image belongs to the late eighteenth-century printed record through which European audiences encountered the Hawaiian Islands after Captain Cook’s voyages.
The composition places the thatched structure within a broader landscape, using hand coloring to define the architecture, vegetation, and surrounding terrain. Its small format reflects the engraved book illustrations produced for geographic and travel publications of the period.
