Plain Cree, Qu'Appelle, Dakota Territory
1870s
Stereoview photograph, albumen print on card
Height approx. 3.5 in. (8.9 cm), width approx. 7 in. (17.8 cm)
Provenance: Jim and Evelyn Wright collection, Westminster, CO
H. Jay Haynes was a commercial photographer based in Fargo, Dakota Territory, who produced stereoview cards of Native peoples, settlements, and western travel subjects for the popular commercial stereoview market of the 1870s and 1880s. This card is captioned "Plain Cree and Family, Qu'Appelle," identifying both the subject and location, and shows a family seated around a tipi with domestic objects and a wagon wheel visible in the scene. Stereoviews were made with two nearly identical images mounted side by side and viewed through a stereoscope to create an impression of depth.
As a documented Cree subject from the northern Plains photographed at Qu'Appelle in the 1870s, this card belongs to a body of commercial imagery that circulated widely in American and Canadian households of the period. Haynes cards with specific Native subject captions are more informative than anonymous ethnographic views and carry greater documentary value as a result. From the Jim and Evelyn Wright collection, Westminster, Colorado.
