$3,800.00

Hopi, Arizona  Circa 1910

Cottonwood root, pigment

Height 8 1/2” (21.6 cm)

Provenance: Tucson trade.

The Ewiro, or Warrior Katsina, is among the protective spirit figures represented in Hopi ceremonial tradition, associated with strength and guardianship within the katsina pantheon. Figures of this type were carved by Hopi men and given to children as educational objects, conveying knowledge of the spirit world through form and painted symbol. This example dates to the early twentieth century, a period when Hopi carving maintained strong ties to ceremonial practice.

The figure is carved from cottonwood root in the traditional single-piece style, with a flat tabletop head form and painted red graphic device on the face mask. The body retains its original ochre and dark pigment with well-developed wear and patina consistent with age and handling. The surface shows honest wear throughout, with no evidence of restoration.
