Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, New Mexico
This Hopi necklace centers on a sterling silver katsina face framed by a fan of finely engraved silver feathers radiating around a stepped mask. A beaded silver collar sits below the face, and two engraved feather drops hang beneath the pendant. The pendant is worked entirely in silver, its detail carried in the engraving and the layered feathers rather than in stones.
The katsina, is a central figure in Hopi ceremony, and here it is rendered in silver as a face crowned with a feather headdress. The pendant hangs from a woven silver rope chain finished with stamped end caps and a handmade link clasp. At 22 inches with a 4 3/4 inch pendant and just over 131 grams, it is a substantial all silver piece built around the engraved feather work.
