Hopi
American Southwest
2010
Sterling silver
Length 32 in / 81 cm
120.31 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico
This Hopi necklace is worked in silver overlay, with paired katsina figures set into angular framed stations running down both sides. Each figure is cut from a top sheet of silver and soldered over a darkened, textured ground, so the dancers stand out against the black recesses. The stations are spaced along silver bench beads, leading to a stepped geometric pendant at the center front.
The pendant reads as a stylized katsina and bird form built from the same overlay cutwork as the stations. The recessed ground is finely textured beneath the cutout figures, the detail carried in the silver alone without stones. At 32 inches and just over 120 grams, it is a long, all silver necklace built on repeated overlay figures.
