American, Southwest subject
1890s
Pencil on paper Mat 15½ x 24½ inches (39.4 x 62.2 cm); image 10½ x 19½ inches (26.7 x 49.5 cm)
Provenance: Jim Jeter, Santa Barbara, California
Fernand Lungren (1857–1932) made his first extended trip to the American Southwest in 1892 as part of a group of artists traveling on a Santa Fe Railroad pass, an arrangement offered in exchange for paintings of western scenery. The journey proved decisive, reawakening his interest in geology and natural history and beginning a sustained engagement with the landscapes and peoples of Arizona and New Mexico. He spent nearly a year on that first trip, drawn particularly to the Hopi, and returned repeatedly through the decade.
This pencil drawing dates from the 1890s period of Lungren's early Hopi encounters, when his documentary impulse was sharpest and his firsthand observation most direct. The horizontal format and scale suggest a composition intended for later development or publication. Provenance traces to Jim Jeter of Santa Barbara, California, where Lungren settled permanently in 1906 and remained until his death.
