Hopi, Southwest
1970
Silver
Length 38 inches (96.5 cm)
Provenance: Tony Hillerman, Gallup, New Mexico
The belt is built from round silver medallions joined by handmade jump rings, each disc worked in relief with a different subject drawn from Hopi imagery, including Kokopelli, a mountain sheep, an antelope, a bird, and geometric and figural motifs derived from pottery and rock art. The medallions are individually raised and stamped rather than cast from a single die, so no two are alike, and the recessed grounds are darkened to throw the raised figures forward. The linked construction allows the belt to drape and move rather than sit rigid, and it can be worn at the waist or lower on the hip.
