Huahine, Society Islands, Polynesia
1836–1839
Lithograph
16 × 20 in. including mat (40.6 × 50.8 cm); image: 6½ × 10 in. (16.5 × 25.4 cm)
Provenance: John Dominis Holt, Honolulu, HI
This lithograph depicts Huahine, one of the Leeward Islands in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. It comes from Voyage autour du Monde sur La Vénus, the published account of the French expedition commanded by Abel Aubert Dupetit-Thouars from 1836 to 1839. The voyage took place during a politically sensitive period in Tahiti and the surrounding islands, as French, British, and American interests were increasingly active in the region.
The image records Huahine as part of a broader French visual and hydrographic documentation of the Pacific. Lithography allowed the scene to be rendered with softer tonal effects than copper engraving, especially in the treatment of land, water, and atmosphere. As a 19th-century voyage print, it connects the Society Islands to the expanding French presence in Polynesia during the decades before formal colonial control.
