Huastec
Gulf Coast, Mexico
250 to 650 AD
Sandstone
Height 7 1/4 inches
Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, acquired 1950s
The fragment is a roughly rectangular block of pitted, coarse grained sandstone with rounded upper corners. One face bears shallow relief carving, including two round forms set side by side, one plain and the other showing an incised spiral pattern within it. A faint linear mark is visible below the two round forms.
The opposite face and remaining sides of the block are left rough and uncarved. The stone surface throughout shows heavy pitting and wear consistent with long exposure or burial. The piece was acquired in the 1950s by Constance McCormick Fearing, whose Pre-Columbian collection was exhibited at LACMA in the 1960s with an accompanying catalog.
