Huastec
Gulf Coast, Mexico
250 to 600 AD
Sandstone
Height 9 inches
Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, acquired 1950s
The head is carved in a rounded, block like form with a broad, flat face. A single raised ridge extends horizontally across the brow, spanning above both eyes, which are rendered as almond shaped forms in low relief. The nose is a straight vertical ridge, and the mouth is indicated by a short horizontal line beneath it.
The surface is coarse grained sandstone in a warm tan tone, with small dark inclusions visible throughout. No ears, hair, or additional ornament are carved into the stone, giving the head a simplified, geometric quality. The piece was acquired in the 1950s by Constance McCormick Fearing, whose Pre-Columbian collection was exhibited at LACMA in the 1960s with an accompanying catalog.
