Huastec Sandstone Head with Elongated Oval Form

$2,200.00

Huastec

Gulf Coast, Mexico

250 to 600 AD

Sandstone

Height 10 1/4 inches

Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, acquired 1950s

The head is carved from pale cream colored sandstone in a markedly elongated, oval form that tapers gently from the crown to the chin. The face is rendered with smooth, shallowly modeled surfaces, showing a faint brow line, a low relief nose, and a subtly carved mouth. Facial detail throughout is minimal, with no incised eyes visible on the surface.

The elongated shape of the head may reflect a practice of cranial modification documented among some Huastec and other Gulf Coast groups, or may follow a regional convention for representing facial proportion. The stone surface is coarse grained and speckled with small dark inclusions typical of sandstone from the region. The piece was acquired in the 1950s by Constance McCormick Fearing, whose Pre-Columbian collection was exhibited at LACMA in the 1960s with an accompanying catalog.
