Huastec
Gulf Coast, Mexico
250 to 600 AD
Sandstone
Height 11 inches
Provenance: Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, acquired 1950s
The sculpture depicts a seated figure, with the knees drawn up and an arm resting against the torso below a face carved with eyes, a nose, and a mouth beneath a fitted cap or headband. Behind the shoulder, an irregular raised mass appears to take the form of an animal, possibly a dog, carved against the back of the figure. Two openings pass through the stone near this area, one larger than the other.
The reverse of the piece is left in a rougher, less defined state, with a smaller circular opening near the top and a larger irregular hollow below it. The surface throughout is coarse grained and consistent with weathered sandstone. The piece is displayed on a fitted wood and metal stand for stability.
