A silver Georgstaler of the Kremnitz type, the obverse with St. George in plate armour on a rearing horse driving his lance into the dragon beneath, encircled by the legend S · GEORGIVS · EQVITVM · PATRONVS, Saint George, patron of horsemen, and the reverse with the ship on the Sea of Galilee and the legend IN TEMPESTATE SECVRITAS, safety in the storm. The type descends from the gold five ducat struck at Kremnitz by the mintmaster Christian Herman Roth, whose dies were reworked in silver and gold for generations afterward, and the medals were carried as talismans by travellers, soldiers and mariners rather than circulated as coin. Pairing the patron of horsemen on one face with Christ calming the storm on the other gave the wearer protection on land and at sea from a single object, which is why the form outlasted the mint that invented it.
