Ibibio Mask, Nigeria

$2,900.00

Ibibio — Nigeria

Early 20th century

Wood and pigment

Height: 8½ in (21.6 cm)

Provenance: Peer Hultberg, Danish author and psychoanalyst

This mask is carved with a rounded blackened face, narrow horizontal eyes, broad nose, and sharply downturned mouth, with features reduced to a severe and direct formal expression. The old encrusted patina carries reddish undertones that contrast with the dark surface and add depth to the carved facial planes. Ibibio masks from southeastern Nigeria are known for bold facial treatment and strong performative character, and this example conveys considerable force at small scale.

The piece was formerly in the collection of Peer Hultberg, the Danish author and psychoanalyst, whose engagement with African art reflected the broader interest among European intellectuals and clinicians in non-Western visual culture during the mid-to-late twentieth century.
