Igbo Mask with Fiber Attachments

$2,650.00

Igbo — Nigeria

Wood, pigment, and fiber

Height: 11¼ in (28.6 cm)

Provenance: Dr. Gulten Wagner, Australia; collected while serving as a diplomat, 1961

This mask is carved in a flat, geometric form with a sharply divided facial plane — white below, black above — separated by a horizontal carved bar across the upper face. Orange-red linear markings on the white lower section add a third chromatic element to the composition, and the bold color contrast between sections carries much of the mask's visual force. Original braided fiber attachments wrap the sides and back, preserving the mask's wearable structure and connecting the object directly to its performance context.

The piece was collected in 1961 by Dr. Gulten Wagner while serving as a diplomat, a documented field collection date that establishes early and specific provenance for the object.
