Igbo — Nigeria
19th century
Brass with custom mount
Diameter: 13⅛ in (33.3 cm)
Provenance: London trade
This large Ogba anklet belongs to a tradition of metal adornment among the Igbo of Nigeria in which brass ornaments of significant scale and weight served as visible markers of status, rank, and wealth. Anklets of this type were fitted by a brass smith and worn continuously once applied, their permanence making them as much a social statement as a personal ornament. The broad circular form and central opening are characteristic of the type.
The surface is decorated with incised and punched geometric designs arranged in repeated panels around the circumference. The custom mount allows the piece to be presented as a sculptural object while preserving its identity as body adornment.
