Inca Kero Drinking Vessel with Painted Figure

$1,450.00

Inca

Peru

Circa 17th century or earlier

Wood with painted lacquer

Height 5 inches, Diameter 4 1/2 inches

Provenance: John Arieta, London

The vessel is a flared wooden drinking cup with a black lacquered surface, decorated in painted gold, red, and white pigment. A vertical diamond lattice pattern runs down the center of the cup, flanked by a standing figure in gold pigment wearing a headdress and holding an object. Scattered small motifs, including dots and heart shaped forms, fill the surrounding black ground.

A triangular stepped motif is painted along one side of the cup, while a zigzag border in red and gold runs along the base. Double incised rings encircle the vessel near the rim and above the pedestal foot. The cup stands on a separate ring footed base, and vessels of this type were traditionally used in pairs for ceremonial toasting.
