India
18th century
Bronze
Height 6 1/4 in (15.9 cm), Length 7 1/4 in (18.4 cm)
Provenance: London Trade
This solid cast bronze depicts the deity Khandoba riding an elephant accompanied by his mahout, or elephant driver. The elephant has long decorated tusks and holds a ritual lustral water vessel in its trunk, attributes consistent with ceremonial representations of this form of Shiva worshipped across the Deccan plateau. The piece carries a fine honeyed patina and is notably substantial for its size.
Khandoba is venerated as a manifestation of Shiva, particularly in Maharashtra, where the deity is worshipped by both Hindus and Jains. Bronze groups of this type were produced as devotional objects for household and temple use, the narrative composition conveying the power and processional authority of the deity. Reference: Mitchell, A.G., Hindu Gods and Goddesses, UBSPD, 1982.
