A rectangular mosaic pendant by Isaiah Calabaza, inlaid across the front in a geometric composition of malachite, lapis lazuli, turquoise, spiny oyster, jet, and mother of pearl. Cut stones and shell are fitted stone to stone into blocks and a central disc, framed at top and bottom by borders of tumbled malachite in black matrix. It is signed and dated by the maker, and hung from a coiled silver wire loop.
Isaiah Calabaza is a Santo Domingo (Kewa) artist known for mosaic inlay work in the pueblo tradition. He builds cut stone and shell into geometric designs set stone to stone rather than in silver channels. His work continues the Kewa lapidary tradition that predates the introduction of silver findings.
