Island Curio Foldout Postcard Surf Riders Hawaii

$200.00

Hawaii, United States

Circa 1901

Color lithograph on paper

With mailing envelope

Provenance: Randolph Crossley, Carmel, CA

This foldout souvenir postcard was published by the Island Curio Company of Honolulu and printed in Germany around 1901, when German lithographers supplied much of the finest color postcard work sold in the Islands. The cover panel, captioned Famous Surf Riders, shows two surfers with wooden boards flanking a central Hawaiian figure amid bananas and pineapples, and the folding leaves open to reveal the royal coat of arms and further Island views. It retains its original mailing envelope and survives as an example of the turn of the century curio trade that packaged Hawaiian imagery for visitors and correspondents.
