Pencil with white heightening on blue prepared paper, gridded for transfer

This pair of drawings is worked in pencil with white heightening on blue prepared paper, each sheet cut to an irregular five sided silhouette. The first sheet shows a lightly draped youth in a winged cap holding a staff with a serpent twined around it, drapery blowing across the body, the attributes identifying the figure as Mercury. The second sheet is a study of armour, with a crested helmet above a rounded cuirass, a fringed skirt of straps below, and a spear set at the left.
A grid of faint ruled pencil lines runs across both sheets, marking them as squared for transfer to a larger composition. White heightening models the highlights of drapery and metal against the blue toned ground on each sheet. The two drawings are presented in matching pale mounts and silver toned conservation frames.
