Ivory Coast Colonial Figure Pair, Suit and Bucket

$1,200.00

Côte d'Ivoire

Circa 1900

Wood

Heights 12" and 12 1/2"

Provenance: Belgium trade

This pair of standing figures depicts a man and a woman rendered in a colonial-era naturalistic style, each carved from wood with smooth surfaces and carefully observed detail. The male figure wears a fitted suit jacket with lapels and pockets, and a cylindrical fez secured by a metal band at the brim, with small inlaid metal details at the eyes. The female figure stands in a skirt, bare above the waist, holding a small carved bucket in her right hand.

The two figures are closely matched in scale and posture, both with downcast eyes and a composed, frontal stance on integrated bases. The wood on both figures has an even warm brown tone throughout, with the carving technique consistent across the pair.
