Jalisco, Ameca style, West Mexico
Protoclassic period, 100 BC to 250 AD
Ceramic
Height 10 in (25.4 cm)
Provenance: Maurice Yanez collection, Pasadena, California; acquired in the late 1970s
The figure stands bent forward beneath the mass of the jar, which rises from the back and finishes in a wide flaring neck with a rolled rim. Long ropey arms reach up over the shoulders so that the hands meet behind the head, gripping a tumpline that passes beneath a circular disc hat. The legs are set apart and slightly bent with the toes modeled at the base, and the head is pushed down and forward in the posture of a carrier under load.
The face is worked with heavy lidded eyes, a broad nose, and one cheek held distended, a detail conventionally read as a quid held in the mouth. The slip is burnished to an orange brown, and a dark firing cloud spreads across one side of the vessel body where uneven oxygen in the open firing turned the iron in the surface black. Fine dark speckling carries across the shoulders and legs, and the modeling, rim, and extremities are intact.
