West Mexico, Jalisco
Circa 600 to 900 AD
Ceramic
Height: 9 in, Width: 5¼ in
Provenance: Scott and Stuart Gentling, Dallas, Texas
Jalisco ceramic figures were produced by the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico and placed as funerary offerings alongside the deceased in underground chamber tombs. The tradition is distinguished by its angular, elongated forms and expressive facial modeling, often depicting seated or standing figures adorned with painted slip designs and simplified anatomical detail. Cream and red pigments were commonly applied to highlight facial features, headdress bands, and limbs.
This seated figure displays the elongated facial modeling and wide seated stance characteristic of Jalisco production, with cream slip contrasted by red pigment along the headdress, arms, and legs. The arms are held forward in a fixed, symmetrical gesture typical of the type, while the rounded torso and outstretched legs give the piece a stable, grounded presence. The Gentling provenance, tied to the noted Texas artist collectors Scott and Stuart Gentling, adds a documented line of ownership.
