This framed piece is a printed commemorative card bearing the ink signature of James W. Marshall, the discoverer of gold at Sutter's Mill in California. The card is headed autograph of, with an oval engraved vignette of the Old Sutter Mill at the upper left, and carries the printed lines identifying Marshall as the discoverer of gold in California with the printed date January 19th, 1848. Marshall's signature is written in ink across the center of the card.
The card is matted on tan backing within a dark wood period frame with a gilt inner liner, and shows light foxing and toning consistent with age. A letter of transmittal is mounted on the reverse. The signed card is presented in its period frame as shown.
