This navy blue one piece bathing suit was made by Jantzen, the Portland knitting company whose ribbed wool swimwear and diving girl logo defined American beach fashion from the 1920s onward. The scoop neck maillot with wide shoulder straps follows the streamlined cut Jantzen introduced as swimming shifted from leisure bathing to an athletic activity in the interwar years. Presented in a shadow box frame, it survives as a wearable record of mid century swimwear design and the material culture of the beach.
