The lithograph shows two rounded, monumental figures wrapped in robes and headcloths, locked together within an oval field of warm orange and brown. Angular staffs and banners cut across the composition, giving the massed bodies the look of a stylized skirmish, with the lower figure bent forward beneath the upper one. The image is drawn in Charlot's characteristic solid, sculptural manner, titled Mock Battle in pencil below the image and presented in an archival frame.
Jean Charlot (1898 to 1979) was a French born artist who became central to the Mexican mural movement in the 1920s, working alongside Diego Rivera and documenting Maya sites at Chichén Itzá. He was a prolific lithographer and helped revive the medium, later teaching and settling in Honolulu, where he produced murals and prints until his death. His work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
