This contemporary pendant necklace by Cajero centers on a hand fabricated sterling silver pendant set with a blue and purple boulder turquoise cabochon. The silver is worked in an asymmetric layered design with fine etched feather texturing framing the stone. The pendant hangs from a stamped silver bail on a braided black leather cord finished with textured silver end caps and a silver hook clasp.
The modernist, sculptural setting places this within contemporary Native American studio jewelry rather than a traditional Pueblo form. The textured silver and single cabochon give the pendant a clean, gallery style presentation. At 2 5/8 inches for the pendant on an adjustable leather cord, it wears as a contemporary statement piece.
Made by Joe Cajero of Jemez Pueblo, part of a well known Pueblo artist family. Joe Cajero Jr. is an award winning sculptor in clay and bronze who also produces silver jewelry, and he and his wife, the jeweler Althea Cajero, were named Living Treasures by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. The couple works from a shared studio in Placitas, New Mexico, and exhibits at venues including the Santa Fe Indian Market.
