A relief printed broadside headed UN VESTIGLO, the word meaning a monstrous or fearsome creature, showing a great skeletal form with limbs radiating from a central skull and smaller skulls set among them, worked entirely in the dense hatched line that Posada used to build tone. Posada produced images of this kind by the thousand for Antonio Vanegas Arroyo's press in Mexico City, where broadsides carrying news, ballads, moral tales and calaveras were sold in the street for a few centavos and read by an audience that often could not read the text beneath the picture. The sheet comes from the collection of Jean Charlot, the painter who arrived in Mexico in 1921 and did more than anyone to bring Posada's work to the attention of the muralist generation, which makes the provenance part of the history of Posada's reputation rather than only a line of ownership.
