King Kalākaua Souvenir Spoon, Sterling Silver

$400.00

Honolulu, Hawaiʻi

Circa 1900

Sterling silver, incorporating Kalākaua 1883 dime and quarter

Length: 4¼ in. (10.8 cm)

Provenance: Martha Pillard, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi

This souvenir spoon is constructed from two King Kalākaua silver coins, an 1883 dime set as the handle terminal and an 1883 quarter formed into the bowl, joined by a twisted silver shaft with scrolled shoulders below the coin handle. The use of actual Hawaiian kingdom coinage as the structural elements of the spoon places this among the more directly numismatic examples of Hawaiian souvenir silverwork, distinct from cast or stamped spoons of the same period. Kalākaua coinage was minted in 1883 as the only official coinage of the Hawaiian Kingdom and has remained a collected series since the territorial period.
