This lithograph depicts King Kamehameha’s compound at Kailua Kona, an early nineteenth-century Hawaiian chiefly site recorded through European voyage illustration. It was published from Louis de Freycinet’s voyage around the world aboard the royal corvettes L’Uranie and La Physicienne during the years 1817 to 1820. Kailua Kona was closely associated with Kamehameha I and the consolidation of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
The image presents the compound as an architectural and political setting, with structures arranged in relation to the coastal landscape. As a Freycinet voyage lithograph, it belongs to the printed record through which European audiences encountered Hawai‘i after the kingdom had entered a period of major political change. The koa frame and Terence Barrow provenance add Hawaiian collecting context to the work.
