$600.00

German, published circa 1820

Circa 1820

Hand-colored engraving on paper, custom linen mat, gilt border

Image: 7½ × 5½ in. (19.1 × 14 cm); matted: 14 × 11 in. (35.6 × 27.9 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Stockholm

This German hand-colored engraving depicts Kamehameha, ruler of the Hawaiian Islands, identified in the printed caption as "Tammeamea, König der Sandwichinseln" — King of the Sandwich Islands — reflecting the spelling and nomenclature used in early 19th-century European publications. Kamehameha's image circulated widely in European print media following Cook's voyages and the subsequent documentation of Hawaiʻi, and German-language publications produced several portrait engravings of the Hawaiian king during the 1810s and 1820s. The original caption wording is preserved here as part of the print's publication context.

The bust-length portrait presents the sitter in Western dress, with selective hand-coloring applied to the face, hair, cravat, and vest. The custom linen mat and gilt border frame the image cleanly without obscuring the printed inscription beneath the portrait. The Stockholm provenance reflects the broad European distribution of Pacific printed material during the early 19th century.
