Tai Sing Loo, photographer
Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii
1930s
Hand tinted photograph
11 x 13 in matted
This hand tinted photograph looks across the seaplane apron at Kaneohe Bay on Oahu, a twin engine patrol flying boat parked at left with ground equipment beside it. Behind the flat expanse of the ramp the bay runs to the base of the Koolau Range, its sharp green peaks rising under a broad bank of cloud. The tinting carries the greens of the ridgeline and the blue of the water against the gray of the apron and sky. The photograph is matted to 11 by 13 inches.
Tai Sing Loo (1886 to 1971) was the official photographer of the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for three decades from 1919. He recorded the Navy's building of new facilities around Oahu in the 1930s, including the air station at Kaneohe Bay, and was known for landscape compositions that set naval subjects against the Hawaiian scenery. His photographs of Pearl Harbor before and after the 1941 attack are among the best known images of the base.
