Khmer Dong Son Bronze Bracelets, Group of Three

$1,200.00

Khmer, Cambodia

Circa 500 BC

Bronze

Height 3 1/2 in (8.9 cm)

Provenance: Martha Pillard, Honolulu, HI

Dong Son bronze bracelets of this type represent one of the earliest and most distinctive metalworking traditions of mainland Southeast Asia, produced during a period of remarkable technological sophistication. The Dong Son culture, flourishing from roughly 1000 to 1 BC, developed bronze casting techniques that spread across a wide region encompassing present-day Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Bracelets of this form were produced in significant quantities and carried social and ceremonial meaning within Dong Son communities.

This group of three bracelets retains the characteristic ribbed surface treatment associated with Dong Son personal adornment, the horizontal banding achieved through controlled casting and finishing. The verde antique patina that has developed over two millennia speaks to the quality of the original bronze alloy. Groupings of this kind are consistent with burial assemblages in which personal ornaments were interred with their owners.
