This Hawaiian ukulele is built of figured koa, the grain running in broad stripes across the soundboard and the whole body finished to a warm honey brown. A band of rope pattern marquetry in light and dark woods runs around the edge of the top and encircles the sound hole in a double ring, with a plain raised rectangular bridge above it. The neck carries a flat fingerboard with metal frets and ends in a shaped headstock fitted with four wooden friction pegs. It comes with its custom leather case, stitched along the borders with a carrying strap and buckle, the leather scuffed and worn from use.
George Paele Mossman (1891 to 1955) was a Honolulu businessman, musician, and ukulele maker of Hawaiian ancestry, whose instruments were sold under his name in the islands. In 1927 the Mossman shop joined Aloha, Kumalae, Hawaiian Mahogany, and Kamaka in forming the Ukulele Manufacturing Association of Hawaii. Instruments carrying the Kinney and Mossman name were sold through Honolulu retailers during the ukulele boom that followed the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition.
