Lakota Sioux Beaded Buffalo Hide Moccasins, Floral

$2,600.00

Lakota Sioux, northern Plains

1880

Buffalo hide, glass beads, sinew

Length 10 1/2" (26.7 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Beverly Hills, CA

Lakota beaded moccasins of the reservation era incorporated both geometric and floral motifs, the naturalistic elements reflecting contact with eastern Woodland and missionary-influenced beadwork traditions that introduced curvilinear design into the Lakota decorative vocabulary during the late 19th century. The white ground with polychrome floral and geometric elements is consistent with Lakota moccasin production of the 1880s, a period when the tradition remained active within reservation communities despite the profound disruptions of the period. The dense seed bead coverage across the full vamp surface reflects the high level of technical investment characteristic of Lakota women's beadwork at its most accomplished.

This pair is fully beaded across the vamp on buffalo hide with a white ground and polychrome floral and geometric patterning in dark blue, green, red, and white, sinew-sewn throughout with the dark upper folded at the ankle. The beadwork is dense and consistent, and the pair retains its overall form and construction integrity. Provenance traces to a private collection in Beverly Hills, California.
