Lakota Sioux Beaded Vest Eight American Flags

Eight American flags wave across this child's vest, four on each front panel, each rendered in white, red, and blue seed beads against a dense white beaded ground. The flags are shown mid-wave on red pole staffs, their stripes rippling and star fields rendered in deep blue, a technically demanding composition carried out with great precision across every panel. A diagonal run of blue beads edges both front panels and the armholes, framing the entire front surface.
The vest is constructed of buffalo hide with sinew ties at the center front, the beadwork covering the full front surface with no background left unworked. The American flag appears with some frequency in Plains beadwork of this era, though full garments devoted exclusively to flag imagery at this scale are considerably less common than single-flag motifs on bags or moccasins. The hide retains a warm tan color at the back and along the interior edges where it remains visible.
