Navajo
American Southwest
1970s
Sterling silver and turquoise
Height 2 1/2 inches, width 3 1/2 inches, 116.97 grams
Provenance: Acquired through trade in Albuquerque, New Mexico
This sand cast buckle has a bowtie shaped silhouette, with two ribbed panels flaring outward to left and right from a raised center. Set at the middle is an oval turquoise in a beaded bezel, a blue green stone crossed by heavy brown matrix webbing. Curling scroll arms sweep off the top and bottom of the center, ending in rounded tips, and a small pointed element rises above and below the stone. The cast silver carries the soft flowing contours and darkened recesses left by the sand casting method, with wear across the raised ribs. The reverse shows the molten cast form, a stamped maker hallmark, and hand inscribed collection numbers, and retains its hook and bar hardware for a belt.
