The region of Veracruz, located in eastern Mexico, has yielded a wealth of intriguing artifacts that have provided valuable insights into the culture, technological advancements, artistic achievements, and religious practices of the preclassic Olmecs. Among these remarkable finds are large-scale hollow clay sculptures known as “Remojadas.” These extraordinary hand-modeled figurines originate from central and southern Veracruz and are named after the region where they were discovered.

The Remojadas sculptures vary in size, ranging from 1 foot to 2 feet. Most of these monumental sculptures of this type depict significant ancestral figures.

Typically, Remojadas figures are crafted from hollow tubes that are carefully cut to fit snugly against the torso and then slipped into place. The head and neck are usually positioned over the opening at the top of the body. Clay is then meticulously applied to smooth and reinforce the joints. To complete their appearance, figures are adorned with flat layers of clay, creating skirts or other garments. Finally, hands and feet are attached to the legs and arms, while noses and jewelry are added as the final touches.
