Leonard Reedy, Under the Night Skies, Oil on Canvas

$8,500.00

Leonard Howard Reedy (1899–1956)

Oil on canvas

Height 31¾ in., width 43¾ in. including frame

Provenance: James Jeter, Santa Barbara, CA; Heritage Auctions, Dallas, August 8, 2019, Lot 57096; Maurice Sternberg Galleries, Chicago, IL

Leonard Howard Reedy was a Chicago-born landscape and figure painter trained at the Chicago Institute and Academy of Fine Arts, largely self-taught. From an early age he demonstrated a facility for drawing western subjects — Indians, cowboys, scouts, and bandits — and was a dedicated admirer of Frederic Remington. He sought to document the spirit and tradition of the frontier era as a living record of American history.

Reedy spent extended periods on the Great Plains and in the desert country, working ranches and roaming with Native people over many years to build firsthand knowledge of the subjects he painted. This canvas depicts a nocturnal riding scene with figures on horseback moving through a dramatically lit landscape, rendered with the kinetic energy and atmospheric handling characteristic of his mature work. The composition reflects his sustained engagement with the action and danger of the western frontier as both historical document and painterly subject.

The documented auction provenance through Heritage Auctions in 2019 and prior passage through Maurice Sternberg Galleries, one of Chicago's established dealers in western and American art, supports the work's authenticity and collecting history. Reedy remains a sought-after figure among collectors of early twentieth-century western American painting. This canvas represents his core subject matter and painterly strengths at their most direct.
