Lere Bronze Figure, Mali

$2,200.00

Mali — Lere region

Circa 1200 AD

Bronze

Height: 1¾ in (4.4 cm)

Provenance: J.P. Chazal, Paris

This small standing figure is cast in a flat, schematic form with angular shoulders, arms held slightly away from the body, and a trapezoidal head — a reduction of the human figure to its most essential geometric elements. The heavily encrusted surface carries deep green and red oxidation consistent with extended burial, giving the object a strongly material presence well beyond its small scale. Bronze figures from the Lere region of Mali belong to an early Sahelian metalworking tradition that produced objects of considerable formal authority through deliberate simplification.

The flat, planar construction and angular silhouette give this figure a visual directness that connects it to broader traditions of abstract figural casting in the western Sudan. The piece was formerly in the collection of J.P. Chazal, Paris.
