Provenance: Private collection, Winslow, Arizona
Inscribed in pencil on reverse: "Little Annie, Apache Indian Buck Skin and Otter Skin Suit"
This cabinet card depicts an Apache woman identified by inscription as "Little Annie," photographed by an anonymous maker in 1890. The image follows the late nineteenth-century studio portrait format, with the sitter posed beside a rustic studio prop and shown frontally for a clear view of clothing and adornment. The reverse inscription gives the portrait useful documentary context, including the sitter's name and a description of her clothing.
Little Annie is shown wearing a fringed buckskin garment, layered necklaces, and an otter skin element noted in the inscription. The cabinet card format, handwritten identification, and Arizona provenance support its placement within Southwest Native American photography. As an identified Apache portrait, the image records dress, studio presentation, and collecting history from the late nineteenth century.
