This 1895 boudoir card by Locke & Peterson of Deadwood, South Dakota, shows a Plains camp scene associated with Young Man Afraid of His Horses, the English name historically used for the Oglala Lakota leader Tȟašúŋke Kȟokípȟapi. The name is more accurately understood as “They Fear Even His Horses,” referring to the fear inspired by the sight of his horses in battle. The reverse inscription identifies the group as “South Dakota Camp, Daughter, Mother, Young Man Afraid of Horses, granddaughter, two wives.”
The image includes figures, tipis, horses, a dog, and camp materials, with printed text on the image reading “Smoking Meat, Crow Agency.” Visible damage to the image should be noted as part of the object’s condition.
