Māori Carved Walking Stick, Wood

$1,200.00

Māori, New Zealand

Circa 1880

Wood

Height: 36 1/4 in. (92.1 cm)

Provenance: London trade

The late nineteenth century saw a significant production of carved Māori objects for both indigenous use and the collector and tourist markets, with Rotorua emerging as a center of this activity. Walking sticks of this type incorporate traditional carving vocabulary, including figural and geometric surface ornament, applied to a form with European functional precedent. This example dates to circa 1880 and entered the market through the London trade.

The shaft carries relief-carved geometric patterning along its length, with a small figural element at mid-shaft and a carved terminal at the top incorporating a stylized face. The wood has developed a warm, even patina consistent with age and handling. The carving is competent and reflects the established Rotorua workshop tradition of the period.
