This 18th-century copper plate engraving depicts a man and woman of St. Christina in the Marquesas Islands. St. Christina was an early European name associated with Tahuata in the Marquesas, appearing in voyage literature and printed Pacific records. Images of this type formed part of the European visual archive of Polynesian people, dress, and encounter.
The engraving uses controlled line work to record the figures within the conventions of 18th-century expedition printmaking. Its presentation within a larger mat gives the small historical image a clean display format. As a work on paper, it connects Marquesan subject matter with the printed history of Pacific exploration and European collecting.
