Massim, Papua New Guinea, 1950s
Wood
Height 13 inches (33 cm)
Provenance: Melbourne trade, Australia
The figure stands frontally on a short fluted pedestal, the legs held straight and close, the arms hanging at the sides with the hands meeting low at the front, and the breasts and navel modeled in low relief above a banded girdle worked in fine notched courses at the hips. The head is carved with wide almond eyes beneath a straight incised band across the brow, a narrow ridged nose, and a small closed mouth, with pierced ear ornaments hanging clear at either side. A shallow open bowl rests on the crown, ringed at its rim with a band of the same notched cutting, and the whole is finished in a dark reddish brown with a glossy surface that catches along the shoulders and the thighs.
