Massim Figure Supporting a Disc on a Ringed Base

$300.00

Massim, Papua New Guinea, 1950s

Wood

Height 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm)

Provenance: Melbourne trade, Australia

The figure is carved standing between two discs, its head pressed directly against the underside of the upper disc and its feet planted on the lower, the arms held against the body and separated from the torso by narrow cut slots. The face is worked with closed lidded eyes, a straight nose, and a small mouth, with incised spirals set at the temples and repeated in a row across the chest and along the flanks, the cuts standing pale against the darker surface. Both disc rims are notched around their full circumference, the lower disc sits on a short cylindrical drum incised with a band of triangles and chevrons, and the wood is a deep reddish brown polished across the head, the shoulders, and the disc faces.
