Maya culture, Mesoamerica
500 to 800 AD
Shell
Height: 2¾ in, Width: 1¾ in
Provenance: Ansen and Christine Nicolov, Darien, Connecticut; Sotheby's New York, Lot 384, June 2, 1999
This carved shell ornament depicts a seated high ranking individual rendered in low relief, with traces of cinnabar pigment preserved within the incised devices of the costume and headdress. Incised line work defines the figure's garment and adornment, while a carved panel below the seated figure bears a repeating circular motif. The compact scale and drilled attachment points are consistent with a personal ornament worn or displayed by an individual of elevated status within Classic Maya society.
The Nicolov provenance, with sale through Sotheby's New York in 1999, documents this piece within a well recorded chain of ownership for Maya shell work of this quality.
